False – for the card itself. And the reason why says a great deal about how much of card design is inherited rather than required.
Why cards expire today
A traditional card carries its credentials twice: printed on the surface and stored in the chip. PAN, cardholder name, expiry date, security code.
Printed data cannot be updated. It can only be replaced. So the expiry date is not the security feature most people assume it to be — it is a scheduled replacement of ageing plastic and ageing data. Your customer pays for it with a gap in their wallet and a card number re-entered across every subscription they own.
Four things that get conflated
The printed credentials. The physical card. The network token. The underlying funding credential.
These are usually discussed as though they were one thing, and that is where the confusion starts. A Tapeeze card removes the first of the four entirely — nothing is printed. What the card holds is a token, not your customer’s account data.
So what actually renews?
The token does, digitally. Tokens are renewed, rotated or replaced by the token service — the same mechanism that keeps a card working in Apple Pay when the plastic behind it is reissued. The funding credential keeps its own lifecycle at the issuer, exactly as it does today.
What changes is that none of that lifecycle has to be printed on, or carried by, the object in your customer’s pocket. The card stays in the field for as long as it physically lasts.
Traditional vs tokenized
- Credentials on the card — Traditional: printed and in the chip · Tokenized: none printed
- How they update — Traditional: replace the card · Tokenized: renew the token digitally
- Expiry on the card — Traditional: a printed date · Tokenized: no printed data to expire
- Card lifespan — Traditional: until the date · Tokenized: until it physically wears out
- Materials — Traditional: print-approved plastics · Tokenized: metal, ceramic, wood, LED, PVC
What this means if you issue cards
Every reissue cycle is a cost, a churn risk, and a moment when your customer has to re-enter their card details everywhere they have saved them. Removing the printed credential removes the reason for the cycle.
It also removes the design constraint. With no PAN, name or expiry to lay out, the card can be metal, ceramic or wood, and it can carry your brand instead of a form.
