The payments industry is undergoing a fundamental shift. As StraitsX recently outlined in their piece on tokenized wearables, card programs are evolving from standalone physical objects into unified financial identity networks, where the credential moves freely across form factors, devices and ecosystems.
For Tapeeze, this shift doesn’t diminish the importance of the physical card. It makes it more powerful.
When payment credentials are tokenized, stored securely in a chip rather than printed on the card surface, the physical card is liberated. No printed number, no CVV, no cardholder name. The entire surface becomes a canvas for the brand. And the process of getting that card into a customer’s hands becomes dramatically faster and simpler than it has ever been.
The Problem With Traditional Card Personalization
In the traditional card issuance model, every card is physically personalized at a factory. The cardholder’s name, card number and CVV are printed or embossed onto the card surface before it is shipped. This process requires a personalization bureau in the critical path, minimum order quantities driven by factory economics, lead times of months, design constraints dictated by what the printing process allows, and significant setup costs for each new card variant.
The result is that co-branded and premium card programs remain the territory of the largest banks and the biggest brands. For most issuers, the economics simply do not work.
What Tokenization Changes

Tokenized cards work differently at a fundamental level. The card arrives blank — no printed credentials on the surface. The payment credentials are stored as a secure digital token, provisioned to the card’s embedded Secure Element chip through the user’s app. The user activates the card themselves when it arrives. That’s it.
Because nothing functional needs to be printed on the card, there are no minimum order quantities driven by printing economics and no personalization bureau in the critical path. The card can be made from any material: metal, ceramic, wood, LED, in any design. Full creative freedom, no constraints. And it can be live in two weeks.
The Brand Opportunity
As the payments ecosystem evolves toward unified financial identity where a single tokenized credential can power a card, a wearable, or a mobile wallet, the physical card does not become less relevant. It becomes the premium brand object at the centre of that ecosystem.
Your card is in your customer’s wallet every single day. It is the most tangible, most visible touchpoint between your brand and your customer. A tokenized card is a fundamentally different product from a standard plastic card, and a fundamentally stronger brand statement.
For banks and fintechs, this opens up branding opportunities that were previously uneconomical: sports clubs, event partners, corporate clients, retail brands, creator communities. Any partner with an engaged audience is now a viable card program.
How Tapeeze Works
The process is straightforward from the issuer’s side, and instant from the cardholder’s.
The bank, fintech or brand starts with a brief: what the card should look like, feel like, and represent. From there, it’s full creative freedom, any material, any finish, any form factor. No design constraint is dictated by what a personalization printer can physically produce, because nothing is printed.
Behind the scenes, Tapeeze connects the card to the issuer’s BIN (Bank Identification Number) – the same underlying rails that already govern the customer’s existing bank card. This means no new card program has to be built from scratch, no new processor integration, no new compliance runway. Tapeeze sits on top of infrastructure that already exists.
Because the card carries no printed or embedded static credentials at the time of manufacturing, it can be produced and shipped globally from day one, the same design, the same production run, regardless of which bank or which customer it eventually belongs to. Personalization happens later, digitally, not at the factory.
When the card arrives, the end user activates it themselves through the Tapeeze app, linking it to their existing bank card. At that moment, a secure digital token – not the actual card number – is provisioned into the card’s embedded Secure Element chip. The physical card becomes a live, fully functional payment credential in under a minute, with no branch visit, no new card number to remember, and no waiting for a replacement to arrive in the mail.
The result: no new card program to stand up, no factory queue, no minimum order quantities. Live in two weeks.
